Before the pandemic, tourism was the third-largest economic sector in Peru —after mining and agro-industry. Now, although it is severely affected, there is a glimmer of hope thanks to the “Volver a Viajar” (Travel Again) campaign promoted by the Government.
The tourism recovery is underway. People feel more confident about traveling across the country now that they have started to get vaccinated.
According to Maria del Sol Velasquez, tourism promotion director at PromPeru, the “Travel Again” campaign is the hope of thousands of families who work in this important economic activity.
“The recently launched campaign aims to promote tourist destinations on a national scale, support formal services, and raise awareness of the importance of travel resumption in a gradual and responsible manner, as part of the sector’s recovery,” she said in remarks to the official gazette El Peruano.
Velasquez explained that the domestic tourism promotion strategy reflects the efforts made to revive it and to show the world that Peru does not stop.
“It revived and has been strengthened with the support of public and private sectors but, essentially, this action calls on Peruvians to support the recovery of tourism,” she stressed.
