Which trek to hike: Rainbow Mountain or Palcoyo?

Rainbow Mountain and Palcoyo are two mountain ranges that give you the most incredible colorful views. But which trek should you choose? We’ve broken down the differences to help you decide.

Rainbow Mountain (AKA Vinicunca)

Rainbow Mountain is the more famous of the two but the trek up is not for everyone. Here are the key points for those interested in the iconic views:

  • Much more challenging experience
  • Round trip walking is 3 hours (approximately)
  • Visitor flow is saturated (depending on the season)
  • Altitude height is 5100 meters (16,732 feet) at the highest peak

Palcoyo

Palcoyo, albeit less known, still has an incredible view that anyone can enjoy. Here are the key points for those interested in an easier hike:

  • Perfect for those who do not want a difficult hike
  • Round trip walking is 40 minutes one way
  • Great for families
  • Takes longer for transportation
  • Not as demanding as Rainbow Mountain, therefore the trail is less saturated
  • Altitude height is 4930 meters (16,174 feet) at the highest peak
