Machupicchu chosen South America’s top tourist attraction in 2022

Once again Machupicchu —Peru’s top tourist destination— has received an international award that recognizes it as an important world attraction. This time, the Inca citadel was selected as South America’s Leading Tourist Attraction 2022 by the World Travel Awards.

The important recognition has been achieved by the Inca citadel for the fifth consecutive year —having previously won this category in the 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 editions.

The latest achievement was reported last week by Peru’s Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru), which highlighted the importance of this award —the regional version of the World Travel Awards, also known as the Oscars of World Tourism.

Yet this was not the only recognition received by Peru; it was also named South America’s Leading Culinary Destination 2022 and Leading Cultural Destination 2022 in the region.

PromPeru recalled that our country had received a total of 20 nominations in this regional edition.

As is known, Machupicchu was previously crowned in this category of the World Travel Awards 2021’s global edition, competing versus major world attractions, such as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, the IMG Worlds of Adventure in Dubai, and the EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin, among others.

In July 2022, Peru commemorated the 15th anniversary of the day this Inca citadel was named one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

Last January, the Historic Sanctuary of Machupicchu —declared a world heritage site by UNESCO— celebrated 41 years as a natural area protected by the Peruvian State.
