New international airport is key to turning Peru into logistics hub

The new Jorge Chavez International Airport —set to be inaugurated in December 2024— will be a key factor for Peru to become a regional logistics hub, New Jorge Chavez International Airport Expansion Project Director Bill Fullerton affirmed.

“The privileged position of Lima airport enables it to become an aviation hub. Besides, by being so close to the coast and such a large ocean that connects us with Asia, this also makes that combination of the merchandise that arrives by sea, and that which arrives by plane, come together into a logistics center (located) in the vicinity of Callao (region), the airport, and the new Port of Chancay,” Fullerton explained.

The expansion project director indicated that the new airport will have a capacity to serve up to 40 million passengers per year by 2025, which represents a 100% increase compared to the current one.

This new capacity will contribute to attracting new airlines and international routes, which in turn will generate greater cargo traffic.

“The arrival of new international routes is expected, either to Europe, the United States, or neighboring countries,” Fullerton pointed out.

“Currently, we have capacity restrictions; however, they will not exist due to the new infrastructure,” he added.

Cargo infrastructure

The new airport will also have a new cargo infrastructure, which will enable it to meet the needs of companies operating in Peru and the region.

“Another effect that this new terminal will have in the middle of runways is that it will allow for freeing up the other existing infrastructure, the platform, so that it can accommodate cargo operations exclusively, which currently can only be carried out during restricted hours,” he indicated.
