Conde Nast Traveller released its annual Hot List featuring the Best New Hotels in the world for 2024. PUQIO, an Andean property in the Colca Valley in Arequipa, Peru, was the only Peruvian property to appear in the list of hotels and one of only 3 in Latin America.
“The tented camp, which also has some traditional adobe round houses, is Peru’s first. It sits in the show-stopping Colca Valley, where Inca-era agricultural terraces line the hillsides and gliding Andean condors mirror the slow pace of life below. […] There are zingy outdoor showers and cosy fire pits from which to watch the sunset over the Colca Canyon (twice as deep as the Grand Canyon). And, although the lodge sits in the heart of the Peruvian Andes, its artful menus and creative cocktails feel on par with Lima’s best restaurants, with a spin on local ingredients such as coca leaves and sancayo (a mouth-puckering cactus fruit). Puqio marks a new era for the Colca Valley and allows travellers to bed into the area’s slower pace for several days, in digs that make it hard to leave.” – Megan Spurrell, Conde Nast Traveller
This recognition comes only 6 months after officially opening its doors to guests for the first time, and only a few months after being featured in articles like “The Best Places to Go in Central & South America in 2024” by Conde Nast and “Rumbo al Sur” by Architectural Digest Mexico.
About PUQIO:
Deep in the heart of the Colca Valley, PUQIO turns back to nature. Surrounded by fuming volcanoes, sweeping grasslands, and untrodden pathways, guests explore the untouched beauty of the Andes daily. At night, the rustic elegance of the tented accommodations rejuvenates the body and spirit of seasoned travellers.
PUQIO offers three distinct room categories—Pirca, Carpa, and Carpa Refugio—each providing unique views and inspired by the original canvas tents of the first Andean explorers. These rugged yet handsome lodgings include outdoor showers and cold plunges to refresh tired muscles, and writing desks for when inspiration strikes. Guided by local artisans, naturalists, and experts, guests can discover the Colca Valley beyond the canyon.
The dining experience at PUQIO is deeply rooted in the land, with meals prepared using traditional methods and the freshest local produce. Corn is harvested by local hands, fresh bread is kneaded with a knowing touch, and family-style meals feature hearty stews and hand-crafted dishes. Whether visiting in the green or gold season, the menu is seasonal and locally inspired, epitomising Andean farm-to-table dining.
