Foreign tourists are spending more when they visit Peru

PromPeru indicated that spending by foreign visitors arriving in our country is increasing.

“Regarding inbound tourism revenue, at the end of the second half of this year, we have achieved US$2.193 billion, which means a recovery of 97% compared to the same period in 2019 (US$2.266 billion), which means foreign visitors are spending more,” PromPeru Executive-President Claricia Tirado informed.

The official explained that this conclusion was reached considering that Peru is still far from the number of international tourists who had visited this country before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, foreign revenue is close to matching pre-pandemic levels.

“For 2024, inbound tourism is projected to reach 3,481,554 trips by international tourists to Peru, representing a growth of 37.9% compared to 2023, when it reached 2,524,658 foreign visitors,” Tirado indicated.

“Besides, there would be an 80% recovery compared to pre-pandemic figures (4,371,787 international tourists),” she added.

The PromPeru executive-president pointed out that tourists from Latin America, the United States, Canada, Spain, and the United Kingdom are returning to Peru with greater frequency.

“We have also seen a good recovery in tourist flows from Asia and Oceania, which are markets that generate high spending; therefore, it is important to continue working there,” she stated.

Tirado indicated that PromPeru is working on a four-pillar strategy: campaigns at the international and national levels; strategic alliances to consolidate inbound and domestic tourism through offers of tickets and accommodations; strengthening the commercial channel for regional companies to sell their products and services; and high-impact events such as Peru Mucho Gusto gastronomy fair or the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.
