Peru’s protected natural areas welcomed over 2.4 million visitors in 2024

More than 2.4 million people visited our country’s Protected Natural Areas (PNAs) in 2024, according to the National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp), an entity attached to the Environment Ministry (Minam).

This marks sustained growth, positioning these ecosystems as Peru’s top tourist destinations.

The record reflects an increase of over 470,000 visitors compared to 2023 (+24%), driven by continuous improvements in services and infrastructure for sustainable tourism offered in these destinations, along with an ongoing strategy for organizing tourism activities.

Anticuchos“small pieces of skewered and grilled meat, the most popular of them made with beef heart,” are also a must-try when it comes to street food.

Among the most visited protected natural areas last year were the Paracas National Reserve, the Ballestas Islands of the Guaneras Islands and Points National Reserve System, the Huascarán National Park, the Historic Sanctuary of Pampa de Ayacucho, and the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.

Additionally, over 68,000 visits were recorded in protected natural areas during the recent long holiday at the end of last year (from December 28, 2024, to January 1, 2025).

Promoting Sustainable Development

Sernanp Chief José Carlos Nieto highlighted that one of the main challenges for managing PNAs this year is strengthening the organization of tourism activities in these natural spaces as sustainable development alternatives benefiting the surrounding communities.

“The increase in visits to these protected spaces helps boost the local and regional economy, encouraging local populations to take part in conservation actions,” he stated.

Nieto added that promoting PNAs as ideal destinations for connecting with nature will continue at both national and international levels. As an example, he cited the recognitions these ecosystems received in 2024, such as the Green Destinations Awards.

Visit Protected Areas

Sernanp has made available to the public the Visit Protected Areas platform, where visitors and tour operators can purchase tickets quickly and securely, with various payment options and information for planning their visits.
