Closure of the Inca Trail to Machupicchu extended until March 31

The closure of the Inca Trail Network of Machupicchu Historic Sanctuary, in Cusco region, has been extended until Monday, March 31, for visitor access due to heavy rainfall in the area and the risk of natural events such as landslides.

This decision was made on Wednesday by the Decentralized Culture Directorate in Cusco (DDC Cusco), the National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp), and Cusco’s Regional Management of Foreign Trade, Tourism, and Handicrafts (Gercetur)which issued a statement announcing the extension of the temporary closure of the Inca Trail Network of the Machupicchu Historic Sanctuary across all its routes until March 31.

The document specifies that this measure aims to protect the physical integrity and health of visitors from the risks caused by the intense rains that continue in Cusco region, which have caused landslides and instability along various sections of the trails.

It also states that the DDC Cusco and the Headquarters of the Machupicchu Historic Sanctuary are carrying out rehabilitation and maintenance work on the Inca Trail Network, which has been affected by heavy rains in Cusco, to ensure the safety of visitors, guides, tour operators, and institutional personnel.

This marks the second postponement of the reopening of the Inca Trail Network to Machupicchu.

The route was closed throughout February for maintenance and reinforcement of tourist areas, with reopening initially scheduled for March 1.

However, due to heavy rainfall and landslides, the closure was extended until March 15.

Due to ongoing moderate to heavy rainfall and the occurrence of landslides in some areas, authorities have decided to postpone the reopening of the Inca Trail Network for a second time.

The statement clarifies that refunds for Inca Trail entrance tickets to Machupicchu will be processed according to established procedures.

Visitors have the option to receive a refund for their ticket or, alternatively, access Route 3B, a designated path to Machupicchu.
