Green Destinations: Peru’s Tingo Maria National Park among sustainable tourism stories

The Tingo Maria National Park, located in Huanuco region, was recognized as the only Peruvian destination among the best sustainable tourism stories in the world, earning second place in the Thriving Communities category of the Green Destinations Story Awards 2023.

With this recognition, the Tingo Mara National Park becomes one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, which stands out for promoting a variety of eco-sustainable opportunities for the benefit of local communities, thus contributing to guaranteeing their improved quality of life while using natural resources in a sustainable way.

The Pomac Forest Historical Sanctuary was also nominated in this contest. It was shortlisted as a finalist in the Governance, Reset & Recovery category, along with other natural and cultural tourist destinations from various parts of the world such as Brazil, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, Australia, among other places.

These destinations were evaluated by an international jury based on their natural importance and articulation with their communities. They were previously selected after a voting process carried out by the Green Destinations organization, in which people from all over the world were able to cast their vote.

Other Peru’s protected natural areas that participated in the competition were the Bahuaja Sonene National Park, the Paracas National Reserve, the Manu National Park, the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, the Tambopata National Reserve, as well as Alto Mayo and Tarapoto (Alto Mayo Protection Forest).

This international recognition, granted by the Green Destinations organization, rewards the most sustainable and environmentally friendly tourist sites. 

The People’s Choice Award rewards the most popular destination in the world for being one of the most inspiring, outstanding, and innovative stories.

About the event 

The Green Destinations Story Awards showcase the most inspirational initiatives for sustainable tourism development in 6 categories from submissions to the annual Green Destinations Top 100 Stories competition.

The ceremony took place at ITB Berlin 2023 on Tuesday, March 7.
